Quangsheng No. 5 Bedrock Pattern Jack Plane
The No 5 is a ‘jack of all trades’ – hence the name. It is traditionally used diagonal to the grain with a heavily cambered iron and a fairly coarse set, performing a similar function on sawn timber as the scrub plane does on riven boards - removing wind, cupping, bowing etc to leave a level furrowed surface that is then brought to final dimension and finished with other planes. Some people set jacks up as smoothers and use them for everything, this is fine if you have very accurate stationary power tools and only ever intend to own one bench plane, but it is worth remembering the second half of the expression ‘master of none’.
Unlike Bailey pattern planes, the frogs of bedrocks have a full contact area with the body and can be adjusted fore and aft without the need to remove the irons. Simply loosen the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjust the central screw to set your desired mouth opening and then nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, more accurate and less likely to damage the cutting edge.
