Hand planes are incredibly precise tools, they can hollow a surface to within microns of perfectly flat, dimension components with similar degree of accuracy and leave a clean, smooth, flawless surface that requires no sanding.

Jack planes No. 5 and 5½ are used for correcting cupped or twisted boards. The longer try, fore and jointer planes No. 6, 7 and 8 are designed to flatten surfaces very accurately.

Smoothing planes No. 3, 4 and 4½ have shorter soles so that they follow the surface and pick up any low spots, taking the lightest of shavings and leaving an immaculate finish.
