Umeki Nomi have slender triangular cross section blades with about half the side height of traditional Oire Nomi. The sides are ground as low as the laminated construction will allow and perfect for cleaning sharp corners especially when cutting fine joints. Light, thin, and accurate, Umeki Nomi are known as dovetail chisels and very well suited to furniture making.

Made for us by Fujikawa in Miki City, Japan, these beautiful Umeki Nomi are made to the same spec as the rest of the Fujikawa professional range with white paper steel hardened to RC63-64, hon akagashi (premium Japanese red oak) handles, blued hoops and hand forged blades.

The square head genno has rounded corners for strength, narrows slightly at the waist and is noted for its excellent directional stability and has a Japanese white oak handle.

The polished faces are selectively hardened by quenching the head under a stream of flowing water, this gives durable working surfaces but leaves the middle of the head softer, which deadens the blow and kills vibration. The polished hachimaki bands around the faces are not a laminated layer but a traditional decorative touch that tidies up the appearance after polishing the faces.

In Japanese tradition, the final securing of hammer and axe heads is performed by the user - who thereby takes ownership of the tool and begins their lifelong responsibility for keeping it secured.
