These marking gauges have a relatively large fence area, providing excellent registration against the workpiece.
The stems on this model are secured with a brass twist lock at the front of the stock. Once the setting is established, small adjustments can be made by tapping the ends of the stem, either on the bench or with a small hammer.
The front stem locates in a D shaped cut-out and remains fixed, there is just enough vertical play in the rear stem to lift its cutter into or out of engagement with the work, so you can have either line or both without losing your setting.
