Bench care tips:
- When oiling a bench, make sure to oil all surfaces (including the underside) at the same time, as the oil is absorbed the wood tends to expand, so keeping the expansion symmetrical will minimise internal tension and reduce the risk of jacking gluelines open.
- Always oil your bench before flattening. If you need to plane the top flat, oil the bench generously all over and leave it to settle for at least two weeks before planing, then oil the planed surface again immediately after planing.
- Boiled linseed, tung oil, hard wax oil or danish oil are traditionally the preferred finishes.
- In most climates the optimum times of year for bench maintenance are the spring and autumn equinoxes, when humidity is at its mid point.
- Dispose of oily rags carefully, (preferably by burning) if left there is a possibility that they can spontaneously combust.
