Uramaru Oire are Japanese incannel carving gouges of similar size to standard oire nomi bench chisels. The harder steel is on the outside and they are sharpened with a single flat bevel in the same way as an ordinary flat chisel.
Used with a hammer rather than a mallet Uramaru are used for cutting U shaped channels in either flat or convex surfaces (as opposed to uchihagane which scoop out bowl shaped depressions) the bevel can be used to create the ends of stopped channels.
Specification, steel and quality are the same as Fujikawa professional bench chisels, with white paper steel and the carefully developed heat treatment that makes it harder and tougher than blue, nonetheless care must be taken to only use them for cutting, never to lever or pry.
Unlike western carving gouges, Japanese gouges come in a single sweep and have rounded cutting edges
