These are the best carving axes I've used for a long time; at either just a pinch under or just over 1lb in weight (400g or 600g versions) they are wonderfully light and fast in the hand. The handle is long enough to swing positively for rough shaping, yet you can adjust your aim or swing with minimal effort and fatigue, choke up for more control, or grab the poll and carve with it like a hand axe, it just works, beautifully.
Made by a collaboration between the Stubai forge from the Austrian Tyrol (forging and heat treatment) and Hewman of France (grinding, hanging and leatherwork). The traditional oiled ash handle feels right in the hand, and the 30 degree flat grind delivers a sweet spot of cutting performance right out of the box. Nobody is trying to reinvent anything here, the goal was a very traditional high quality carving axe at a great price.
A fully welted and rivetted mask is included in the price, made from thick natural leather to protect the cutting edge from everything else and vice versa.
