Spoon carving blanks cut from lime give you the best possible start. It's a wood that is forgiving to work, holds crisp detail and has been the carver's material of choice since Grinling Gibbons was working in the late 1600s.
This blank is shaped and sized for a stirring spoon, with the rough form already established so you can focus on refining the profile and hollowing the bowl rather than removing unnecessary timber from the outset.
Lime, also known as linden or basswood, earns its reputation for good reason:
- Fine, consistent grain that cuts cleanly in any direction
- Soft enough to work with hand tools without fatigue
- Holds fine surface detail well once shaped
- Takes a good finish straight from the knife with minimal sanding
A spoon knife and a short-bladed carving knife are all you need to get started. Finish with a food-safe oil - mineral, linseed or walnut - once you're happy with the shape of your spoon.
Equally well suited to beginners finding their feet and experienced carvers who simply want reliable, ready-to-use material.
