Japanese Marking & Measuring
This category covers the marking tools needed to lay out and check work accurately before cutting: from rules and squares to gauges, calipers and marking knives. Precision at this stage saves time and material later, since a joint or cut is only as good as the line it was laid out from.
Shinwa has manufactured rules and squares since 1971, and the brand's reputation rests on accuracy that holds up to repeated daily use. Their tools are made to JIS standard and finished with deep etched graduations that resist wear, often combined with a hard chrome surface for durability and a non-reflective finish that makes scales easier to read at the bench.
The range covers most of what a workshop needs for layout and checking:
- Carpenter's squares, including flexible and profiled versions, marked with multiple scales for angle and dimension work
- Sliding bevels and mitre squares, for transferring and checking angles, including dedicated tools for 45 and 90 degree work
- Rules, from rigid stainless steel and acrylic to traditional bamboo, in flush ended, centre finding and flexible formats
- Calipers and gauges, covering inside and outside measurement, taper checking, radius work and profile copying
- Drawing compass and protractors, for circular and angular layout work
- Marking knives, including kasaya and kensaki styles, many with a single bevel blade for accurate, tear-free layout lines
- Loupes, ink and marking pencils, for marking and checking fine detail
Whether you need a single replacement rule or a full layout kit, the consistency across the Shinwa range means tools bought separately over time will still sit well together on the bench.
