Japanese Rasps & Files
Iwasaki carving files dominate this range, alongside Sakazume precision sanding tools and Shinto saw rasps, all suited to shaping and finishing wood by hand.
Iwasaki files are milled and chemically etched to produce teeth that cut quickly without clogging, leaving a surface noticeably smoother than a standard rasp. The teeth are staggered and shaped to act as miniature chip breakers, which clears waste efficiently and reduces the sanding needed afterwards. Used with the grain or across end grain, they cut cleanly into curved and detailed work that would be awkward to shape by other means.
The range covers most shaping needs:
- Flat and half round carving files, in fine, extra fine and bastard cuts, for general shaping and detail work
- Round files, in fine and extra fine cuts, for hollows and curved profiles
- Tapered and cranked files, for reaching into recesses and awkward angles
- Woodworking floats, with edge or face toothed cutting action for fast stock removal
- Carving File Sets, combining several files in a canvas tool roll for a complete shaping kit
- Sakazume sanding blocks, files and abrasive paper, for precision sanding once shaping is complete
- Shinto saw rasps, for rapid, coarse material removal where speed matters more than finish
Whether you're roughing out a curve or refining the final surface, this range covers the full sequence from shaping to finishing.
