Narex Spoon Carving Tools are made from the same wonderful high carbon tool steel as their chisels and carving tools. The shape is excellent with large bevels to multiply leverage so the cutting edge slices readily through the wood, the chunky solid beech handle fills the hand properly which reduces the tendency to grip it too tightly - a common cause of fatigue. It also means that if you wish to adapt the handle shape slightly there is plenty of material there to work with.
This single edged right handed spoon carving knife is a pleasure to use, the blade is tapered in its length and has a smooth convex bevel that gives a very controlled cut. Single edged blades are slightly safer as there are fewer sharp edges to be aware of. You shouldn't need to apply pressure with the thumb on the back of the blade - if you feel the urge to do this then it is a good indicator that the blade needs honing or you need to take lighter cuts (or both).
