Pax Saws
Pax saws are Thomas Flinn's flagship range of hand saws, made in Sheffield using saw making methods refined over two centuries.
Each 2017-pattern tenon and dovetail saw has a handmade walnut handle finished with Danish oil, teeth sharpened by hand and a test cut performed before it leaves the workshop. The polished folded brass back sets these saws apart from cheaper slotted and glued alternatives: if the blade ever picks up a slight distortion, the back can simply be tapped to re-seat it, giving the saw a long working life rather than a fixed one.
In the predominantly London based saw trade of the late 18th century, the terms dovetail, carcase and sash referred to saws under 12”, under 14” and under 16” respectively; anything longer than 16” was a tenon saw. Over time the centre of British sawmaking moved to Sheffield, and “Tenon saw” came to be used as a general term for all back saws over 12” long. We have reintroduced the older terminology here as it makes it easier to understand which saw is for what.
- Dovetail saws: backsaws under 12", suited to fine joinery and small-scale work
- Carcase saws: backsaws under 14", suited to general carcase and cabinet work
- Sash saws: backsaws under 16", suited to larger joinery
- Tenon saws: backsaws over 16", suited to cutting large tenons and heavier joinery work
