The standard angle block plane is better suited to long grain work and smoothing. With the standard 25 degree blade you have the same effective angle as a bench plane: 45 degrees.
Block planes are trimming tools, they take components from 'near enough' to 'bang on' and can therefore remedy a multitude of slight inaccuracies in the earlier stages of production. The short sole makes them ideal for tidying up little patches of tearout and their relatively light weight means that after a while you almost use them without thinking.
Installing an optional 38 degree blade brings the effective angle to 58 degrees - just a hair under cabinet pitch which gives improved performance on hardwoods.
A 50 degree blade will gives an effective angle of 70 degrees which will tackle highly figured timber with ease.
