An old stock Sheffield made scribing or scratch awl with round teardrop handle in sonokelling rosewood with a brass ferrule.
Overall length: 165mm / 6½" approx
Point: 80mm / 3" approx
The hardened tip of the scratch awl is intended for setting out work, for example scribing a pair of intersecting lines and indenting the point of intersection to guide the tip of a drill exactly to its mark. It can also be used to mark soft metals like aluminium or bronze, for piercing leather or canvas prior to stitching, but also comes in handy for a myriad of other duties like poking fluff out of places, or applying small drops of glue, paint or oil with great precision.
