Hand crafted in gidgee and brass by Australian makers HNT Gordon, this gorgeous spokeshave has a 55 degree bedding angle (middle pitch) in order to cope with the very hard timbers encountered in the southern hemisphere. For occasional situations where you can't come at the work from the right direction, the hand sharpened HSS blade can also be inverted in the body and used with the bevel up as a scraper.
The solid brass body gives the tool a pleasing heft in the hands and the authority to cope with difficult grain. A narrow mouth eliminates the issue of snipe, and a full 12mm of bed ahead of the mouth gives the tool a natural aptitude for keeping straight profiles straight in their length, albeit at the cost of hollowing ability in the length of the work.
For rounded cross-sections we recommend setting the blade with a fractionally heavier cut on one side than the other, so that the shaving thickness can be fine tuned on the fly, without adjustment, by simply shifting the cutting point left or right. This can be easily and repeatably achieved by slipping a shim (business card etc) under one side and allowing the blade to settle on a flat surface.
