Naniwa Advance range of Japanese super stones were developed for ultimate polishing performance on tempered high carbon steel - straight razors, western edge tools etc. They have that lovely bite and feedback of a traditional Japanese waterstone but are harder and more wear resistant. In use they require less pressure and produce a very even and consistent scratch pattern so they feel extremely fast, hold their flatness beautifully, and leave a superb polished finish.
The Advance range also have the advantage of being available as combi stones, so although they are not particularly cheap you do add two grits to your sharpening arsenal at a time.
The 3k/8k is a pure polishing stone, you already need to have a honed bevel established and the burr removed before moving on to this stone which will transform the misted bevel to a gleaming mirror. Lovely for honing straight razors, paring chisels and smoothing planes where you really experience and appreciate the quality of the edge.
