Ideal for shorter length blades like butt chisels, spokeshave irons or Japanese planes, the Richard Kell No.2 honing guide with small rollers is a superbly designed and made tool. It can be used for longer tools, western plane irons, standard length chisels etc but if you don't require the short blade capacity, then you'll probably find the large roller version is more balanced for longer items.
The No.2 accepts parallel sided blades up to a width of 2⅝ inch, so there are very few tools that won't fit for width. A pair of polycarbonate washers grip the blade from the sides whilst the back of the blade registers against a pair of stainless steel rods. This unique arrangement uses the correct face of the tool as the datum for the bevel angle and allows tapered blades such as those found on Japanese tools to be honed accurately.
The Ertalyte® TX rollers are machined from solid in pairs to ensure accuracy to better than half a thou.
All of Richard Kell's honing guides come with a copy of his wonderfully clear set of handwritten instructions, complete with neatly drawn diagrams, that leave you in no doubt that your honing guide was made by a man for whom precision is as essential as breathing.
