The shooting board is a traditional workshop aid, used in conjunction with a bench plane laid on its side, that enables the user to cut square ends on small components with a high degree of precision.
Constructed from stable 18mm birch ply, with fence and hook made from solid beech and assembled on a jig in a factory for consistent squareness of well within half a degree.
The final minutes and seconds of squareness are achieved through setting the lateral adjuster on the plane and using a paper shim behind one end or the other of the component. By this means it should be possible to halve a knife line struck square to the reference edge.
