This tool, designed by Reg Sherwin, is made from stout 16 mm ( ⅝") round bar with a 13 mm (½") diameter half-round flute producing a deep but narrow shaving - so the lathe does the work rather than the turner. Because the full diameter of the bar is extended into the handle there is minimal vibration, even when turning down 4 in. or 5 in. square timber because it is relatively slim, it can get into places where other roughing gouges are too big.
The material of choice is M2 HSS, a tried and tested tool steel that has been used for cutting metal since the 1870's, was first used for woodturning tools in the 1970's and has since become the standard choice for stock removal tools ever since thanks to it's excellent wear resistance. All Ashley Iles HSS turning tools are cryogenically hardened in a vacuum chamber which consistently ensures optimum strength and hardness.
Ashley Iles woodturning tools are individually handmade in England, they are ground by hand to a beautiful finish with all edges eased so that they feel wonderful in the hand.
