Naniwa Advance range of Japanese super stones were developed for ultimate polishing performance on tempered high carbon steel - straight razors, western edge tools etc. They have that lovely bite and feedback of a traditional Japanese waterstone but are harder and more wear resistant. In use they require less pressure and produce a very even and consistent scratch pattern so they feel extremely fast, hold their flatness beautifully, and leave a superb polished finish.
The 400/1000/3000/8000 sequence over two combi stones should cover all your needs for woodworking.
The 400/1000 covers routine maintenance, periodically removing wear or damage and re-establishing surfaces ready for polishing. You don't need to soak it for any length of time, just a quick dunk or a generous spritz and away you go.
The 3000/8000 is a pure polishing stone, you already need to have a honed bevel established and the burr removed before moving on to this stone. The 3000 side is used without a nagura and refines the surface finish to a low sheen ready for the final step. The 8000 side starts with a nagura slurry at about single cream consistency, keep adding water to bring this down to milk, then just water for the last few strokes.
