If using the Naniwa advance stones for honing straight razors, the final recommended step is a light stropping on an uncharged (no compound) smooth faced natural leather strop. Stropping doesn't add sharpness, but increases the smoothness of the edge, providing a considerably closer and more comfortable shave.
As for the polishing stone, the razor is always drawn across the strop with the cutting edge trailing (otherwise it will cut into the leather) the edge only leads when setting a bevel on a medium stone. Assuming no damage, a razor can be rested and stropped several times before it needs re-honing, and honed several times before it needs re-setting, thus any single razor in a set may only see the 1k stone once or twice a year.
Magnolia wood core, neoprene on the bottom for grip, neoprene then leather on the top giving just the right amount of squidge to ensure you contact the edge with minimal pressure.
For knives and tools we prefer a fluffy faced strop on hard wood, charged with chromium oxide.
