A carefully handpicked selection of hand stitched rasps to cover a wide range of small to medium sized work.

For curved components, start by laying out the profile of your work in 2D on all the faces of the blank. Remove as much of the excess material as possible by drilling or sawing, then turn to the hand rasp (flat) to tidy up and create a squared off version of the shape with a couple of mm to spare all round.

Next comes the cabinet rasp with slightly finer teeth to begin establishing facets, this is the careful process of removing the corners of the squared off version to begin releasing the finished shape.

The halfround (finer still and able to form tighter curves) forms tiny facets on the intersections of the facets and then blends the curves together. Its fine teeth leave a surface that is easily sanded, filed or scraped smooth.

The round rasp is finer still and can get into tight diameters like the insides of open scrolls, leaving a very good finish.

The square and triangular rasps are usually used to open out drilled holes to create shaped ones, think of the arched holes for a plough plane's fence stems or the space between the feet of a standing animal carving. They can also be handy for producing a clear shape in narrow grooves and tight corners.

Each Workshop Heaven hand stitched rasp begins life as a forged and annealed blank of high carbon tool steel is carefully ground and 'fined' to a smooth surface before being strapped to a soft anvil to have their teeth individually raised or 'stitched' one by one with a special punch and a curved file makers hammer.

The handles are turned from English walnut with brass ferrules to a 200 year old Holtzapffel pattern, individually fitted and set by hand for a comfortable, elegant and secure grip.

Rasp Care
In order to keep your rasps clean and free from corrosion we recommend removing any clogging from the surface with a stiff bristled brush and applying a few drops of metalguard ultra liquid corrosion inhibitor after each use. Store your rasps in such a way that they cannot touch or rub against each other.
