Beautifully forged and hand ground in Saint-Etienne, with flat polished carbon steel legs braced with a bowspring which is governed by clever double bored conical nuts that can be angled and slid into position, then re-engaged under spring pressure so you can fine tune the adjustment.
The hardened steel points are removable for sharpening (by mounting them in a drill). The tips are supposed to cross rather than meet in order to prevent them damaging each other.
Ledin compasses, dividers and calipers may cost a little more than cheap mass produced ones but their rigidity, accuracy and reliability put them in an altogether different league.
The maximum spread (capacity) is equal to the total length of the arms for an opening of 60° in this case 100mm.
