A large bench spindle for making L shaped tail vices, carver's chops, or even fancy Moxon vices with the thread sticking out of the back instead of the front.
The nut is free to move along the full length of the thread, the garter behind the boss is captive. Designed for squeezing things together between the nut and the garter.
