Float Glass Lapping Plate for Scary Sharpening
This 2kg block of 10mm thick float glass delivers the perfectly flat, rigid surface essential for the scary sharp method of tool sharpening. Designed specifically for use with sheet abrasives and lapping film, this glass lapping plate gives woodworkers a professional-grade sharpening system at a fraction of the cost of traditional waterstones.
Why flat glass is the best scary sharp substrate
The lapping plate is sized to match the width of 3M lapping film sheets, so you can use both ends of the glass for flattening the backs of chisels, plane irons and other blades. The length accommodates multiple abrasive grades simultaneously: lay out your full progression from coarse to ultra-fine without constantly swapping sheets.
Why we chose non-toughened float glass
When putting together our scary sharpening kits, we tested toughened float glass, but the heat treatment process itself introduces subtle surface distortion; the very flatness you need for scary sharpening is partially lost during toughening. Our glass is therefore non-toughened, which preserves its exceptional flatness. Please handle with care: if dropped or broken, it will produce sharp shards.
Specifications
The larger lapping plate is 110mm longer than our standard float glass plate, allowing more strips of scary sharpening abrasive to be adhered to the sheet.
