Block Planes
A block plane is one of the first tools most woodworkers buy and one of the last they stop reaching for. Small enough to use one-handed, it excels at trimming end grain, chamfering edges to prevent breakout, and tidying up the small inaccuracies that creep in during earlier stages of work. Its short sole makes it ideal for cleaning up patches of tearout that a longer plane cannot reach.
We stock block planes from Clifton, whose vacuum cast bronze bodies are individually machined and hand finished in Britain, and Quangsheng, whose ductile iron castings offer serious performance at a more accessible price. Mujingfang's traditional wooden-bodied planes are also available for those who prefer a lighter touch and a different feel underhand.
Within the range you will find:
- Standard angle block planes, set up for general trimming and chamfering work
- Low angle block planes, better suited to end grain and figured timber
- Rebating block planes, which reach into internal corners like a broad shoulder plane
- Pocket sized block planes, kept in an apron for quick work at the bench
Whichever you choose, every plane comes with our lifetime guarantee and the honest advice we are known for. If you are unsure which angle or size suits your work, get in touch and we will point you in the right direction.
