The Hewman Carving Axe is the best carving axe I've used for a long time; at just over 1lb in weight (600g) it is wonderfully light and fast in the hand. The handle is long enough to swing positively for rough shaping, yet you can adjust your aim or swing with minimal effort and fatigue, choke up for more control, or grab the poll and carve with it like a hand axe, it just works, beautifully.
Made by a collaboration between the Stubai forge from the Austrian Tyrol (forging and heat treatment) and Hewman of France (grinding, hanging and leather work). The traditional oiled ash handle feels right in the hand, and the 30 degree flat grind delivers a sweet spot of cutting performance right out of the box. Nobody is trying to reinvent anything here, the goal was a very traditional high quality carving axe at a great price.
A fully welted and riveted mask is included in the price, made from thick natural leather to protect the cutting edge from everything else and vice versa.
