Robustly designed with a stiff rivetted hinge, the hinged, wing-braced arc gives a more robust action than a threaded rod compass.
The points are intentionally ground to cross rather than meet, this greatly reduces the risk of damaging the hardened tips and does not affect the accuracy of the tool once the points are spread to a position within the working range.
