Wood carving blanks cut from lime give you a clean, reliable start. No knots, no unpredictable grain, just a wood that responds well to sharp tools and rewards careful work at any skill level.

Lime, also known as linden or basswood, has been the preferred carving wood since Grinling Gibbons was producing his extraordinary work in the late 1600s. Fine-grained, consistent and forgiving under the knife, it holds crisp detail without splintering and finishes cleanly straight from the tool.

At 10" x 4¾" x 1⅜" this blank suits a good range of projects:

  • Relief panels with room for flowing botanicals, portrait medallions or heraldic and decorative motifs
  • Fish, birds in flight or animal forms with enough surface to develop the composition properly
  • House signs, name plates or wall plaques with carved borders and lettering
  • Chip carving at a scale that suits ambitious geometric or folk art patterns
  • Small standing figures or caricatures with freedom in the design
  • Serving boards, butter paddles or decorative kitchen pieces

The 1⅜" thickness naturally favours relief and shallow three-dimensional work over fully in-the-round carving - worth bearing in mind when planning your design.
