Every Mujingfang plane is crafted by hand from a single piece of carefully selected air dried timber, shaped by hand and finished with scrapers to expose the natural sheen of the wood. This 180mm curved profile plane is built with a body of African Jackalberry (Diospyros mespiliformis), a beautifully figured species of ebony and fitted with a dovetailed brass wear strip forming the front of the mouth.
Taiwanese-style planes are similar in design and function to Japanese kanna: they have a separate cap iron sprung against a cross pin and can be used on either the push or pull stroke, whichever suits the work in hand. The curved sole makes this size well suited to working curved and coved surfaces, chair seats and shallow hollows where a flat soled plane won't reach.
