Sometimes simple objects that have evolved over centuries have a functional elegance that makes them delightful to use - this slender Japanese* sliding bevel is one of them.
Press the cutout in the invisibly rivetted stock to open it, a knurled thumbscrew pinches the hinge while you take your measurement, the thumbscrew has a screwdriver notch so you can set it firmly and transfer your angle as many times as you like. Like an English bevel the slot means you can push it tight into a corner or slide it along and have the +/-180deg versions on opposite sides.
I can't fault the job Shinwa China have done of manufacturing them, beautiful job, so this time you can have good, fast, and cheap all at the same time.
