Each pen blank is cut from stabilised Turkish walnut, with the top face sanded to reveal the figure beneath and photographed individually, so you can pick the exact piece you want from the dropdown list.
Three names dominate the London gun trade, James Purdey & Sons, Holland & Holland and Boss & Co., each of whom will build a bespoke shotgun or rifle around a stock cut from their own reserves of air dried Turkish walnut.
The offcuts from those same boards, the wood that once surrounded the gunstock blank, find their way to Workshop Heaven, where we turn them into small batches of blanks for pen turners and knifemakers alike.
Stabilising the timber under vacuum with resin, then curing it, gives the wood a strength and stability raw walnut cannot match. On the lathe this means cleaner cuts, less risk of chipping or cracking around the bushings, and a finish that can be brought up to a high gloss with abrasives alone. Turkish walnut's chocolate-brown colour and dark figure make for a striking finished pen.
