Another tool from the village blacksmith range, the pick mattock has a pick on one side to break up the soil and a hoe on the other to clear loose material away from the digging face. Same principle as a pick and shovel but much lighter, for small digging and tilling jobs you'll wonder how you ever managed without one.

Like many Japanese tools, it is left to the new owner to secure the head by tapping the butt on the ground to seat the head and then hammering in the wedge, at this point the user takes responsibility for the head always being secure in use.

Avoid the temptation to pry and lever under roots, this is a wonderful tool for exposing them but when it comes to cutting them you need to use an axe or a saw.
