This beautiful laminated Japanese timber framer's slick chisel is used for fine tuning large scale joinery.
Where the Sashi Nomi 54mm slick earns its place:
- Fine tuning large scale joinery – used for fine tuning large scale joinery, this slick is suited to paring back tenons, dovetails and other joints on substantial timber sections where a standard bench chisel lacks the reach or leverage.
- Timber framing and green oak work – the 54mm width and long usable blade make it well suited to trimming and cleaning up joints in structural framing, barn restoration, and other heavy timber work.
- Boat building – slicks of this type are traditionally reached for when fairing and fitting large curved or heavy sections where control over a long, shallow paring cut matters more than speed.
- Cleaning up sawn or chopped joints – ideal for taking a final, controlled shaving off the cheeks or shoulders of a joint after initial sawing or chopping with a mallet-driven chisel.
- Working close to a shoulder or housing – the blade is canted to clear the neck and handle, so the effective cutting depth is unlimited, allowing long paring strokes across wide joints without the handle fouling the work.
As with all slicks, this is a hand pressure paring tool only. It should never be used to lever or pry, nor should it ever be struck with a hammer or mallet, and if the blade becomes lodged in the work it should be eased out with a gentle side to side movement rather than forced.
Made by the same guys that produce our Japanese paring chisels, some will be marked and others not, depending on the seniority of the smith that made them, but all have been inspected and passed by a master Japanese blacksmith.
The blade is canted to clear the neck and handle, so the effective cutting depth is unlimited.
