Each of these stabilized Turkish walnut pieces has been sanded on the top surface to indicate the figure within and individually photographed, please choose your preferred knife blank from the dropdown list.
Turkish walnut (Juglans regia) is sourced from the Anatolian region and ranks among the finest hardwoods available to makers, long favoured for fine furniture, musical instruments and gunstocks. Its deep chocolate-brown heartwood, dark mineral streaks and dramatic wavy figure mean every blank has its own character.
The London gun trade is best known for three makers: James Purdey & Sons, Holland & Holland and Boss & Co. all of whom will make a best quality shotgun or rifle by hand to fit your body and requirements, starting with a blank of your choice from their library of beautifully air dried Turkish walnut.
But what happens to the wood that used to be around those gunstock blanks? Some of the secondary cuts from those exact boards end up here at Workshop Heaven, prepared into gorgeous quality blanks for knifemakers and pen turners.
These knife blanks have been stabilised, with resin infused into the timber under vacuum and pressure then cured to lock it into the cell structure. The process produces a denser, harder blank that resists moisture movement and takes a high polish, well suited to knife handles that see regular handling and washing.
